Maybe for some the game’s horror elements are still king but for the first game in the franchise, it was actually a pleasant surprise for me. I do understand that some of the games are definitely more pure horror oriented). If anything, this experience felt more like exploration/survival/puzzle than actual horror (maybe this was obvious and known to the community, but as someone distant from it I had a different perception.
In more recent years however I’ve been thinking that maybe I’ve been missing out, that RE is more than just a simple horror experience and offers a lot more than just scares. That experience, coupled with not really enjoying horror that much as a genre even in adulthood kept me away from the RE franchise. I first came across RE at the age of 4-5 and it wasn’t long before I decided I had no interest in even watching it, let alone playing.
